NSP was founded in 2001 from the vision of Bruce “Buzz” Hansen, a lifelong surfer, skater and all-around waterman. While working on Maui as a custom surfboard builder, he identified a clear gap in the market: everyday surfers needed affordable, versatile and durable boards capable of delivering reliable performance in demanding conditions, without the cost or exclusivity of custom or competition-oriented designs.
This philosophy became the foundation of NSP: surfboards designed for real-world use, accessibility and longevity, serving a broad and global community of surfers.
In 2019, NSP initially approached me with the objective of redesigning their website. As the project evolved, it became evident that a purely digital redesign would not be effective without first addressing the brand’s visual and strategic foundations. The existing identity no longer reflected the scale of the brand, the diversity of its product offering, nor its long-term ambitions.
I therefore recommended and led a comprehensive brand and visual identity redesign as a prerequisite to the website development. This approach made it possible to clarify NSP’s positioning, establish a coherent and scalable visual system, and define a strong framework capable of supporting the brand across products, packaging, communications and digital platforms.
The project culminated in the development of a new visual identity system and the design of a new website, presenting NSP with a more clear, contemporary and purposeful brand expression, aligned with its values and future direction. Once the core identity system was defined and delivered, the work was handed over to NSP’s internal graphic team, who then rolled it out across the full product range and continued its application and evolution from there.
At the core of the work was the redesign of the logotype, conceived not only as a name mark but as a strategic brand device. The goal was to give NSP a dual reading—both as a brand name and as an implicit acronym, reflecting the brand’s evolution and its growing commitment to sustainable surf products, responsible manufacturing and long-term durability.
The resulting identity provides NSP with a flexible, coherent and future-proof visual language, capable of evolving over time while remaining true to the brand’s original DNA: performance, accessibility and authenticity.
